Emma and Lane’s wedding day in New Bern, North Carolina was so memorable. They were married at Stanly Hall Ballroom, and if you’ve ever walked through downtown New Bern, you know how much history and charm it holds. Their day reflected that so perfectly! It felt classy and elegant, but still personal and full of thoughtful little details that made it completely their own.

One thing I especially loved about this setting was getting to photograph everything on both digital and film. The rich blue walls of Stanly Hall were stunning in person, but on film? They had this depth and softness that just felt nostalgic in the best way. Wedding film photography captures light so beautifully — it adds this romantic layer that I’m always drawn to! At the same time, digital allows me to move quickly and capture all the crisp, in-between moments as they unfold. The laughter. The reactions. The little glances no one else notices. Blending both gives my couples a gallery that feels full and layered — not just pretty images, but a complete story of the day in the exact space they chose. And that’s always my goal!

If you’re looking for a digital + film wedding photographer in North Carolina, I’d love to connect!

Before we dive into the rest of this wedding day, I want to actually walk you through it the way it unfolded. Not just tell you about it, but show you. Think of this as a visual timeline of the day, with real, authentic moments, honest emotions, and all the in-between magic that made it feel so special. Let’s dive in together.

Beginning the Day with Details

When I arrived at noon, I started with 45 minutes of detail photos and I genuinely LOVE beginning a wedding day this way. I was especially excited to use the ballroom itself for Emma’s details. Stanly Hall Ballroom has these beautiful blue walls and the prettiest hallway with natural light pouring in, and it made everything feel instantly elevated. The moment I walked in, I knew it was going to photograph so beautifully.

I’m always paying attention to what a venue gives me visually. I don’t just look for a blank wall. I look for a  space to feel like part of the story. The tones, the light, the textures. All of it matters. And this ballroom gave me so much to work with! Having that time at the beginning of the day gives me creative freedom in the best way. It lets me slow down, breathe, and really take in what’s in front of me (the gown, the florals, the invitation suite) and think about how everything fits together. I love pulling in elements from both the bride and the venue itself to create detail photos that feel cohesive and intentional. It’s one of my favorite parts of the day because it sets the tone for everything that follows!

Getting Ready with Emma

After I finished up the details, we moved right into final getting-ready photos. Emma and her girls were in that same light-filled hallway, putting on finishing touches, laughing, and just soaking it all in. We grabbed the sweetest PJ photos before she stepped into her dress, and you could feel the excitement building.

Her mom helped button her gown, and there were so many buttons. I feel like every time I see a dress like that I’m like, “Okay, this is going to take a minute,” but it’s honestly one of my favorite parts of the day. Everyone kind of gathers around, helping, fixing little things, double-checking everything. It’s busy, but in a sweet way. You can feel the excitement, but it’s still calm at the same time. It’s that little in-between moment before everything really starts!

We had planned to do a first look with her dad. But wedding days have a funny way of doing their own thing — and honestly, I’ve learned that those are usually the best moments! While we were still buttoning her dress, her dad accidentally walked around the corner and saw her.

He just froze for a second… then walked straight toward her and took her hands. My second shooter and I both caught it, and I’m so grateful we did! It wasn’t staged or announced. It was just real and completely unfiltered. And those are the moments I care about most on wedding days! That’s why I stay ready at all times, because sometimes the most beautiful parts of the day are the ones no one planned.

Stepping Outside to Christ Church

Stanly Hall is gorgeous, but it is mostly indoors and a little smaller, so I almost always recommend stepping outside for portraits if you’re getting married there. It just gives us more space and more variety, which I personally love. And the best part is that Christ Church is literally right across the street. It makes it so easy! The backdrop there is beautiful, and it fits the whole downtown New Bern vibe so well without us having to go far at all!

We started with bridesmaids portraits there to get as much done as possible before the ceremony. Since Emma decided not to do a first look with Lane, we were really intentional with the timeline so we could knock out portraits early. I always walk through that with my couples ahead of time because it just makes the day feel way less rushed later.

When Lane arrived, I photographed him getting ready in that same hallway I had used earlier. I actually love doing that because it keeps the gallery feeling cohesive without anyone even realizing why. After that, we headed back over to Christ Church for groomsmen portraits  and those were so fun! The guys brought such good energy, and I always like giving them a mix of classic, clean shots and a few that feel more relaxed and natural. It keeps things moving and makes it way less stiff.

Before the ceremony, Lane brought a handwritten note for Emma, and they read their letters separately. My second shooter photographed Emma opening hers while I captured Lane reading his. Those are some of my favorite images from the whole day. They’re not posed. They’re not performative. It’s just them, taking a minute before everything starts.

The Ceremony at Stanly Hall Ballroom

Before guests came in, I grabbed some ceremony detail photos and just took a second to really look at everything set up. The florals from Grace & Ivy Floral looked so good in that space, and Emma’s dress matched the overall design perfectly. It all came together in a way that just felt really cohesive without feeling overdone.

Planning by Weddings and Events by Frankie Hill made everything flow so smoothly. Days like this remind me how important a good planner is! It allows me to focus fully on the moments instead of worrying about what’s happening next.

When the ceremony started at 4:00, I positioned myself to watch Lane’s reaction. And I’m not kidding when I say that was one of my favorite moments of their entire wedding day! The second he saw Emma, you could just see it all over his face. It was emotional in the sweetest way. Their ceremony felt so genuine and heartfelt, and I remember standing there thinking, “This is why I love doing this.” It wasn’t just beautiful because of the decor (even though it truly was stunning). It was beautiful because of the way they looked at each other. And that’s what I always want to capture!

Emma & Lane’s Outdoor Wedding Portraits

After family photos and full bridal party portraits, we moved straight into Emma and Lane’s couples portraits around 5:00 PM. And October light in North Carolina? It’s just really, really good! It was soft without being harsh, bright without being blinding, basically the kind of light photographers hope for all day. The timing worked out perfectly, which I always love when that happens!

This was one of those moments where shooting both film and digital really made sense. The wedding film photography picked up that warmth in such a natural way, and digital let me move quickly and capture all the in-between laughs and little reactions.

It felt calm. It didn’t feel rushed. It was just the two of them, soaking it in for a minute before heading into the reception. And those are usually the portraits couples end up loving the most!

The Reception at Stanly Hall Ballroom

They kicked off the reception with their first dance right as they entered, which I always love. It just sets the tone immediately and brings everyone into the celebration. Dinner was catered by Strange and Sons, and once everyone had eaten, the party really got going. Y-it Entertainment kept the dance floor full all night — there was no awkward “waiting for people to start dancing” moment. It just flowed.

I was kind of obsessed with their cake. The swan on top was such a fun touch, and it looked so good in the ballroom. It photographed beautifully!

One of my favorite little surprises was when Emma changed into her second dress. The big bow on the back was made from her mom’s wedding gown, which I just thought was the sweetest detail!  I love when couples find ways to bring family history into the day like that. It adds so much meaning without needing to be flashy.

From there, it was just dancing, laughing, and fully celebrating. They ended the night with a sparkler exit which honestly felt like the perfect way to close it out. It was such a fun day. Elegant but also joyful and relaxed in a way that felt completely true to them!

A Note from Emma

“Elizabeth was the part of my wedding I didn’t have to worry about. Knowing that I could trust her wholeheartedly to arrive and work her magic – from start to finish – was exactly the peace of mind I needed. Every moment with her felt effortless. She made our wedding parties comfortable, and even my husband. She took the time to get the shots that were important to me and executed them flawlessly. Seeing our wedding gallery and reliving the best day of our lives was a dream and I proudly display the photos anywhere that I can.” -Emma Bates
