How to Plan Beach Engagement Photos on the East Coast

Beach engagement photos have a completely different feel than almost any other type of engagement session. There’s less structure, more movement, and usually a little bit of unpredictability. The wind doesn’t always cooperate, the tide has its own plans, and chances are you’ll leave with sand somewhere you weren’t expecting! That’s also part of what makes beach sessions SOO fun!

Cassidi and Logan’s engagement session reminded me why I love photographing couples by the water. Their gallery felt relaxed from the start, and the combination of film photography and the coastal scenery created some of my favorite images from the entire spring season. Before planning your own beach engagement photos, there are a few things worth knowing that can make a huge difference in both your experience and your final gallery!

What Is the Best Time of Day for Beach Engagement Photos?

One thing that surprises a lot of couples is that East Coast beaches photograph differently than beaches on the West Coast. When people think about beach photos, they often picture the sun setting directly over the ocean. On the East Coast, that’s not what happens. The sun rises over the water and sets behind the land, which means the light you’ll get at sunrise is completely different from the light you’ll get at sunset. Because of that, sunrise is usually my favorite time for beach engagement photos.

The beaches are quieter, temperatures are cooler, and the light reflecting across the water creates that soft glow that so many couples love. If you’ve ever saved beach engagement photos on Pinterest and wondered how they got that look, there’s a good chance they were taken shortly after sunrise! That doesn’t mean sunset isn’t beautiful. It absolutely can be! I just like couples to know what to expect before choosing a time. Sunset sessions often create softer pastel skies and a completely different feel than a golden sunrise over the water.

What to Wear for Beach Engagement Photos

The beach is one of those locations where I always recommend dressing for the environment rather than trying to dress around it! One of the reasons beach engagement photos feel so effortless is because they’re naturally full of movement. You’re walking through the sand, running along the shoreline, and usually ending up with a little wind in your hair. The most successful outfits are the ones that embrace that rather than fight against it.

For women, I almost always recommend choosing a dress with movement. Long, flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they catch the ocean breeze and create that soft, cinematic feel that so many couples love. The beach usually isn’t the place for ultra-structured dresses or sky-high heels. Bare feet or sandals that can easily be slipped off tend to make the experience much more comfortable and allow you to move around naturally throughout the session!

For men, I typically suggest keeping things relaxed while still feeling polished. A beach session doesn’t usually call for a formal suit and tie. Linen shirts, breathable fabrics, khaki or tan trousers, and light neutral colors photograph beautifully along the coast while still feeling elevated. The goal is to look put together without looking like you’re headed to a formal event.

The biggest thing I encourage couples to think about is how their outfits will photograph in motion. Beach engagement photos aren’t meant to feel stiff or overly posed. They’re often some of the most playful sessions I photograph, and choosing outfits that move with you helps create images that feel natural and effortless from start to finish.

What Makes a Great Beach Engagement Photo Location?

When couples start searching for locations, they often focus entirely on finding a beach. When I’m helping choose a location, I’m usually looking at everything surrounding the beach too! Some of my favorite beach engagement photos have been taken at locations with sand dunes, sea oats, boardwalks, piers, or docks nearby. Those elements help create variety throughout a gallery and give us more options than standing in front of the ocean the entire time.

A beautiful shoreline is great, but a location with a little texture and dimension often creates a much stronger gallery overall. That’s one of the reasons I always recommend scouting a location beyond the first stretch of sand you find!

The Best Beach Engagement Photos Usually Involve Movement

One thing I hear all the time is, “We’re awkward in front of the camera.” The good news is that beach sessions are one of the easiest environments to work around that. Most of the time, I’m not asking couples to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera. The beach naturally lends itself to movement. Walking along the shoreline, running through the surf, sitting together on a blanket, or sharing a bottle of champagne gives couples something to focus on besides being photographed.

That’s usually when the best moments happen! The beach doesn’t need a lot of elaborate posing. Some of my favorite images come from simply giving couples space to interact with each other while I document what unfolds naturally.

Cassidi and Logan’s beach engagement photos felt exactly like that. We weren’t chasing perfect poses all evening. We spent most of our time moving around, talking, and letting the location do what it does best!
