I have to notice the father beginning to tear up before his daughter walks down the aisle, recognize when the maid of honor is about to burst into laughter during her speech, and see the hug forming before it happens. There isn’t time to react afterward. The photograph has to be made in the moment. That level of attentiveness only comes from experience, observation, and being completely immersed in the day alongside my couples.

Rather than documenting events after they’ve happened, I’m constantly watching for the emotions that are just beginning to unfold. Those genuine reactions are often the photographs couples treasure most.
